Citrus fruits have been known in Europe for their medicinal value since the Roman times, much earlier than the timeline in the article suggests.
Citron, one of the earliest varieties of citrus known to Romans, have been mentioned in Pliny's Natural History, and known to have medicinal values. Per Wikipedia, it's been used in cooking since the second century.
