I fish the West Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii- ono,mahi, ahi, sailfish, etc.

IMHO the biggest safety factor missing from the article was a yak leash to your ankle (or other preference).

If you huli, or just fall out (I've seen that) and there is any kind of wind it's bye bye yak.

A PFD won't do much for you in that situation except prolong the agony. Keeping your yak is the safest thing you can do.

Guys worriedabout the surf can disconnect on the way out or in.
