I canoe in Florida and the Everglades in both salt and fresh waters. As far as I am concerned I will not let any pet join me on the canoe. The joy of taking my dog on the trip will be ruined when an 8, 10, or 12 foot gator or crocodile decides to climb in the canoe to eat my dog. And using a pencil between the gators eyes to stop him I think has been over rated. Add to that we are not allowed to carry any weapons like a 45 in the Florida Everglades even though we also have 20 – 25 foot anacondas swimming out there. They like dogs too! We have been told for decades that the favorite food of the alligator is the dog, small or big; it is the favorite of the gator. I have heard of 5 foot gators trying to take down a 90 pound golden retriever.....BVD Miami Florida
