Tandem Canoe Paddling Tip of the Day - Honor thy Bowsman
Note to macho stern paddler guy: Sorry, but you are not the captain of the boat. I know you and everyone else says you are, but it ain't so, at least not on whitewater. In a noisy rapid, it is difficult to communicate with your partner. Effective communication is the most important element of successful tandem paddling. Chances are your bowsman will not hear you screaming directions at her. Nor will she be able to see what strokes you are executing so she hasn't much of a clue as to what you want to do. However, you macho sternman, can see exactly what she is doing. So FOLLOW HER LEAD! If she draws to the left, then you execute a complementary stroke to take the boat left. If she backpaddles to slow down, then backpaddle and slow down, etc. etc. Working together is more important than being "right" about which way to go. (re-read previous sentence). And if you hit a rock, flip, or even drown you will always have the satisfaction of knowing it wasn't your fault, macho stern paddler guy.
