It can be very windy here, lasting for days. The channel can become choppy with large waves. Take enough extra water for several days, if you should have to wait out the wind. But it can also be calm for days. The west coast of the island is more sheltered, and has more places to land--beaches and coves. You will need shelter from the sun, but usually you can find a cliff or a cave that offers shade during the hot parts of the day. When walking in shallow water, you should drag or shuffle your feet, to scare away stingrays.
