Rutabaga is owned and operated by Darren Bush and Jeff Weidman, two guys who could have real jobs but would rather sell the best paddlesports equipment on the planet. We seem to be doing it pretty well, as we are the only 5-time winner of the Canoe and Kayak Paddlesports Retailer of the Year.
Our mission is simple: we sell stuff that makes it easy for people to enjoy paddling, be it a canoe or a kayak, flatwater, whitewater, the local pond, Lake Superior, or any of the world's oceans. We do it in an ethical, professional, and often unorthodox manner. We are people who believe in giving excellent service, selection, education and value to each and every paddler or potential paddler who walks through our door, virtually or otherwise.
Madison, Wisconsin might seem like a strange place to put the biggest paddlesports shop in the world, given that the water is stiff four months out of the year and pretty dang cold for another two. But Wisconsin has 14,000 miles of navigable rivers and over 10,000 lakes. We may not have a long paddling season, but we do have a rich one.
Rutabaga Outdoor Programs teaches over 1,100 children and 500 adults a year paddling skills from recreational kayaking to navigation and advanced rescue techniques. Our adaptive paddling program allows people with disabilities the opportunity to paddle, assisted by instructors certified for working with paddlers with various disabilities.
Our philosophy is that local shops service paddlers best. That said, if a city or area doesn't have a paddlesports shop (or if that shop isn't doing it the way it should be done), we'd like to be there to make sure no one misses out on paddling because of equipment availability or expertise.
Visit us on-line or in person (we like that better).
