That's a question I get asked a lot by my non-paddling friends. To be honest, even a lot of paddlers don't understand why someone would want to spend eight days in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. After all, it's not glamorous, there are no modern facilities, and you have to put up with lots of bugs and whatever Mother Nature decides to throw your way. Worse yet, a weeklong trip is a whole lot of work.
Despite their best concerns, my wife, Chris, and I enjoy a wilderness vacation. This year we arranged a trip through Gunflint Northwoods Outfitters and headed to the Boundary Waters. We made our way from Michigan, through Wisconsin and up Hwy 61 from Duluth, and then up the Gunflint Trail. We arrived at Gunflint on a Saturday, late in the afternoon. After meeting with the outfitters and looking over our route, it was time for supper. If you haven't had a meal at the Gunflint Lodge, you're truly missing out. We had a fantastic meal, after which we were ready to settle in for the night. | |
