Shark bites kayak off Pacifica, CA

June 26, 2013:

A shark took a bite out of Micah Flanaburg's kayak off a Pacifica beach on Tuesday, while he was fishing, but he escaped unharmed.

The incident happened off Pacifica State Beach at 4:55 p.m. as he was fishing with his father-in-law. A shark swam up to him, "bit the kayak, then briefly circled around the craft before swimming away," said Pacifica police Capt. Joe Spanheimer.

Flanaburg said that the shark was about 12 feet long.

"Probably the scariest part was when it let go, cause it swam back around and I thought he was going to come and take another bite, like right where my legs were."

Great white sharks are present along the Bay Area's ocean coast usually in the summer and fall, when the water is warmer. It was not known, however, whether it was a great white that bit Flanaburg's kayak.
