15 paddlers rescued from swelling Saco River
July 29, 2014
Fryeburg, ME — Police say 15 people were rescued from the Saco River after the river swelled during a late-night canoeing trip.
WGME-TV reported that the river swelled 2 feet in just 10 minutes, capsizing one of the canoes. The swelling river left the group stranded in a part of the river that is not easily accessible by land.
Police say that high water and thick fog made for extremely unsafe conditions. It took rescue crews four hours to bring all of the campers to safety early Tuesday morning. No one was hurt.
