Kayak to the 2014 Superbowl?

When Super Bowl XLVIII comes to television on Feb. 2, viewers from around the world will probably see little evidence - or, perhaps, none at all - that the game is actually being played in a giant, long forsaken, much maligned swamp.

It's a place where nature has proven resilient despite mankind's best attempts to tame and kill it. A place where characters, stories and myths (like the one about Jimmy Hoffa being buried in the end zone) flourish. And where planners' dreams, from sea plane ports to giant dairy farms, to trash landfill ski slopes, have often gone to die.

We took our kayak ride this fall before the weather turned cold. The goal? To see if we could actually paddle to Met Life Stadium, where the Super Bowl will be held Feb. 2, 2014. Because on a map, before we set out, it looked so easy...
