"The Guide To Sea Kayaking in Southern Florida" by acclaimed and experienced instructor Nigel Foster is mandatory reading for any paddler considering the warm waters of the Sunshine State. The book has 230 pages of selected paddles, all with a simple but adequate map including a line for the paddling route, and information about land features, paddling highlights, and put-in/take-outs. The book is straightforward and elegant in its approach to the trips and covers primarily the ocean and river paddles along the Gulf coast from about Tampa down to the Keys. Perhaps the book could be more comprehensive with east Florida routes, and might include color maps or photos. It is also slightly dated and a revised edition would be appreciated (although the paddle routes have not changed).
Mr. Foster has a lovely series of instructional videos on paddling (see that separate review) and his tone is always educational. Nigel even adds some sidebar stories and information (e.g. about manatees) that adds local color to the read. The Guide to Sea Kayaking in South Florida is indispensable for a new paddler to these waters.
