Mandatory for all paddling denizens of Illinois, Mike Svob has done a glorious job of outlining the best river and stream paddles in the state. Over 64 paddles are mentioned, each with a black and white photo, and each with nice descriptions of what you will see on the route, a map of each route, the put-in/take-out information, and even some water guage info. Although the author paddled these waters several years ago, the information remains timely and accurate based on the paddles I have done. This book can literally be used by a paddle group to select trips on waterways that might otherwise be forgotten, or to seek paddling in specific locations for travelers to the Abe Lincoln state. Mike Svob's tight and efficient writing style and use of a standardized format for each location makes this book readable and informative. on more than one occasion, I have photocopied the pages to use as a map on the actual paddling trip. It is unfortunate that Mr. Svob's educational and practical styel could not be applied to many of the lakes of Illinois; this book is solely about rivers and streams. Perhaps we could coax the author into another edition to include flatwater Illinois paddling, a subject for which I have never seen an ideal book. But for moving water, Paddling Illinois is as good as it gets.
