Over the last 14 months the Java has become my favorite boat (out of four types). I have twice taken it to Georgian Bay, Ontario. Still the most comfortable boat I have used. I can paddle it for hours. Our new dog was able to sit on the bow and drink water as we paddled. Recently paddled it in 15 plus knot winds.
You will be slower than hard shells, but other than that had no problems. The skeg is a pain to lower w/ the rope. Recommend you drop by hand before launching (my wife uses the skeg, I do not). Left the boat assembled for 11 months. Only slightly sticky to break down.
