"The Kayak Companion" by Joe Glickman (Storey Publishing, 2003) is 136 pages of interesting reading that, although not a comprehensive study of kayaking, provides a reassuring and humorous look at the sport we all love. Joe has been kayaking since 1993, and he shares his adventures, ones that we can all relate: our first ride in a tipsy kayak, our desire for speed in a kayak, and that deep tickle that urges us away from our day jobs to exotic kayaking expeditions.
Joe is a sound writer, and this two time member of the U.S. National Marathon Kayak Team offers an often funny look at the sport, all the while teaching us about what he has learned, always in an entertaining light. This short read is wonderful for an afternoon on the dock, sipping ice tea, and imagining our own growth as kayakers. Joe’s writing is one part instruction, one part funny bone, and two parts experience, and together they concoct a toxic margarita of paddling that should not be missed. You will undoubtedly pick up a few “pearls” about our sport from The Kayak Companion.
