The ABCs of the Surf Zone is a stellar video. It is part of the University of Sea Kayaking series by Wayne Horodowich, and it is well worth the price of the disc for those interested in paddling the ocean surf zone. The length of the lesson is three full hours. The cameras are basically in the field, assessing wave patterns, learning about breaking patterns and the break zone, assessing points of launch, how to guide a tour in the surf. It even teaches how to be a surf team leader, what you need to know to coordinate your team’s efforts, which paddler should launch in which order based on skills, and so on. I don’t even live near surf (yet), but found this video very informative. The deduction of one point is for sound quality and camera quality… this is not the most professional appearing tape. It has variable sound level as most of it is taped outdoors. Same for the lighting. But that does not deter Wayne and his fellow paddlers from demonstrating some of the most awesome techniques—and yes, wipe outs—knows to surf kayakers. Heck, they even wipe out in shallow waters just to show how to cope with a sandy crash. They teach how to paddle across waves, through waves, and surf with waves. You can imagine that there is ample information to be garnered in over three hours of video. Hard to beat the price for the amount of contained information, and this is likely why the Sea Kayaker Magazine 2005 Readers Poll rated this as the #1 kayaking DVD. Worthy of your time and your wallet.
